Our adventure in Southern Florida started with a flight into Fort Lauderdale, Florida and a one night stay near Hollywood, Florida. Hollywood is nestled between Fort Lauderdale and Miami and has a beautiful boardwalk lined with street lights along the beach. The weather was rather unsettled that night, but made for some good pictures. See the gallery below.
Leaving Hollywood, Florida, we made our way south through Miami towards the Florida Keys. Our first stop was Key Biscayne which is just outside of Miami and is Northeast of Key Largo. We stopped in at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. There is a beautiful lighthouse and you can watch kite surfers catch some air out in the distance.
Arriving in Key Largo, we headed to the quieter, southern end of the key, and checked into our timeshare unit at Ocean Pointe Suites in Tavernier, Florida. Below are some of the pictures of the unit. Ocean Pointe Suites is available through RCI (timeshare) and can also be found on VRBO and AirBNB.
The next day we ended up driving all the way to Key West, just to say we did it and immediately turned around and went back up to Islamorada and ate dinner at, what would soon become, one of our favorite stops in the Keys, Marker 88 Restaurant. Below are some pics from there.
Down in Marathon, Florida there is a wonderful stop called the “Turtle Hospital.” Here you can see numerous sea turtles in various stages of rehabilitation. We also saw the Turtle Ambulance bring in a new turtle that was found on one of the beaches.
Another fine stop is called Robbie’s in Islamorada. Here you can enjoy fine brews, food, take a sunset cruise, fish, or Feed the Tarpon. We highly recommend the Tarpon feeding. It is a lot of fun to watch these fast fish chase after their catch. We also took the sunset cruise out to Alligator Reef Lighthouse. The sunset was hidden by clouds, but that’s the chance you take and it was our last night so we said “Go for it!”
