We drove up to Mackinaw City from Bellaire where we first captured a glimpse of the “Mighty Mac.” The “Mighty Mac” is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere and is breathtaking to see from a far, drive over, and boat under. We decided to make crossing the bridge part of our trip so that we can at least say that we went to the Upper Peninsula and that we were on the bridge. We chose to grab a ferry out of St. Ignace, Michigan and chose the last “Mighty Mac” tour ferry through Shepler’s Ferry Service. The last departure for the “Might Mac” tour was at 10:30 AM that morning. It is worth seeing! They took us directly under the bridge and into the two Great Lakes that straddle it. Where else can you visit Lake Michigan and Lake Huron on the same trip?
The island is known for its vehicle-less streets. Bicycles are available for rent as well as horses. Prepare to pay a pretty penny for the bicycles, but they are the only way to see the ENTIRE island.
We chose a ride in a carriage which took us around Main Street, up to the Butterfly Conservatory, over to the State Park and Arch Rock, before finally ending up back at the Fort and downtown.
